Antiaging Skin Care - With So Many Choices, How Do You Choose?

by Janet Enck

Have you ever wondered how to choose an antiaging skin care product? There are hundreds of different kinds from many different companies. All seem to claim that theirs works better than anyone else's. Many do work, but other claims are just hype.

You can ask your friends what they are using and that might give you some insight to some products to try. But remember that everyone's skin is different. What works for them, may or may not work for you. The best way to choose a quality antiaging product is to read the ingredients.

First, check for antioxidant vitamins like A, C and E. All of these are effective in combating the deterioration of the skin. Vitamin A may also be called retinol or retin A and helps fight lines and wrinkles as it stimulates the cells. Vitamin C is one nutrient that is needed by our bodies but not produced by it. You need to supply this powerful antioxidant to help with collagen production. Vitamin E is good for dry skin and helps smooth out rough patches.

You may also want to look for products that contain Alpha and Beta hydroxy acids. Many skin care products do already contain these because they help activate the cells to turn over at a more rapid rate. This gives the skin a healthy look.

Other ingredients to look for include peptides, copper, alpha lipoic acid and elhibin. This last ingredient is plant derived and helps to moisturize and protect the skin. Kojic acid is another good ingredient and is a natural skin lightener. It may be found in eye creams and skin brighteners.

The best antiaging products are derived from plant sources rather than animal sources. Specifically, this means collagen. Animal collagen molecules are too large to penetrate human skin and can clog pores. Instead, choose products that encourage the skin to make its own collagen, like those with antioxidants.

You may also want to watch out for mineral oil, waxes and petroleum. Although these products won't hurt you, they also don't allow the good ingredients in your products to benefit you. Instead, they provide a barrier and block the absorption of nutrients.

Synthetic dyes and fragrances used in many products can cause allergic reactions. They can also clog pores. There is also some speculation as to whether or not synthetic dyes are safe. Since they don't provide any benefit to the skin, why use them?

Preservatives in the paraben family should also be avoided. Methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl parabens can cause skin rashes and other reactions. The cosmetic industry claims they are safe in small amounts, but since they are toxic, it's best to stay away from them.

You've been taught to "read the labels" on food products, now it's time to read the labels on your antiaging skin care products. That way, you're spending your money on products that will help you look younger and not just drain your pocketbook.
