Wrinkles - How to Stop the Aging Process

The topic of wrinkles probably makes you cringe -- hopefully not too much though or else you will add some new wrinkles to your face. We all get them and as we age most of us women want to reduce them.

Wrinkles are caused by a loss of collagen and elastin. These are tissues in the skin that make it firm and elastic. The degree of wrinkling depends on your genetic makeup and the pace your skin wrinkles is dependent on smoking, dry skin and sun exposure. The sun can play a big part in wrinkling especially in the case of sunburns so avoid the sun whenever possible. Believe it or not, facial expressions can also play a roll in wrinkles such smiling, cringing and frowning.

So what can you do to reduce or slow the wrinkling process?

The following items can play a role in slowing, stopping or
improving wrinkles:

Retin-A
Vitamin C
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Laser Resurfacing
Collagen Injections
Chemical Peels
Botox Injections
Fat Transfer
Moisturizers
Sunscreen

A definition for each one of these products or procedures is beyond the scope of this article but all of these treatments can help depending on the severity of your wrinkles.

Here are some tips for looking after your skin as you get older:

* Use a sunscreen every day. This will prevent further aging of your skin.
* Give up smoking.
* Avoid over-washing. As your skin does not sweat as much when you are older.
* Use a 'cream bar' or 'cream body wash', rather than soap.
* After bathing or showering, apply a body cream. This is better than using bath oil, which can make the bath or shower dangerously slippery.

Can improving your diet prevent wrinkles?

According to New Scientist (July 2001) researchers studied over 400 elderly people and their eating habits. They found the least wrinkly seniors had maintained a diet that consisted of eating a lot of beans, fish, vegetables, low- fat milk and tea. The wrinkliest seniors had consumed lots of soft drinks, cakes, red meat, pastries and full-fat dairy produce. Draw your own conclusions, but a good balanced diet at very least can keep your weight under control.
