Understanding How Our Skin Works

Skin is the largest organ in our body, a living outer envelope covering it and saving it from the undesirable actions of environment.

Skin is essential for survival and its main functions are:
1. Protect the body from outside aggressions of bacteria, microorganisms, solar radiation, physical and chemical harmful elements.
2. Regulate temperature by preventing heat loss or by sweating during exercise for rapid cooling.
3. Act as an exchange area between the inside and outside environments.
4. Support production of vitamin D valuable for metabolism.

Skin has two layers - the epidermis and dermis. The epidermis is the outer layer protecting against dehydration and infection. The underlying dermis is responsible for the elasticity of skin, which is vital to body movement and very important for our appearance and certain social and interpersonal reactions.

Skin is influenced by the lifestyle, environment, seasons and the aging process. The skin condition is a perfect indicator of general health situation, reflecting what is happening within the body.

Despite of fact skin is important for our look, it is rarely appreciated until it is damaged. An understanding how our skin works is important in using effective skincare products.
